What I fix
Repairs for cameras that still deserve to be used
Most jobs fall into a few categories. If yours doesn’t, send a photo and a description – most things are fixable.
CLA – Clean, Lube, Adjust
The standard service for any camera that’s sluggish, sticky, or hasn’t been serviced in years. Shutter speeds, aperture, and focus mechanisms cleaned and re-lubricated.
Light seal & foam replacement
Perished foam is the single most common cause of light leaks. Full strip and replacement with correct-thickness material.
Rangefinder & viewfinder calibration
Focus patch alignment, viewfinder cleaning, and collimation so what you see is what lands on the film.
Shutter repair
Sticking, capping, or uneven exposures, shutters diagnosed and rebuilt where parts allow.
Lens fungus, haze & separation
Elements cleaned or, where needed, disassembled and treated. Honest assessment given if a lens isn’t worth saving.
Everything else!
If you’re unsure what’s up, I’ll diagnose the issue and get your gear up and running again.
How it works
From drop-off to a working camera
- Send it in or drop it off – Describe the fault as best you can, what it does, what it should do, and how long it’s been like that.
- Diagnosis & quote – The camera is opened up and fully assessed before any work starts. You get a clear quote, no surprise costs.
- Repair – Work is carried out on the bench, one camera at a time, with original or correctly matched parts where possible.
- Test roll & return – A real roll of film runs through before the camera goes back to you, so you know it actually works.
Trusted by
Partnered with Brighton labs
When a lab’s customer brings in a camera that’s jamming, light-leaking, or metering wrong, it gets sent here. Chemistry and Picture This – Brighton’s two film labs – refer their repair work to Mycroft Cameras.
That trust is built one camera at a time – with honest quotes, careful work, and a test roll before anything goes back out the door.
About the bench
One person, one bench, a lot of small screws
Mycroft Cameras started as a way of keeping old, well-built machines alive rather than letting them sit broken in a drawer. In the first year, that’s meant working through over 200 cameras and lenses; everything from simple services to full shutter rebuilds and CLA’s.
Every repair is done by hand, on one camera at a time, with the same standard – it doesn’t leave the bench until it’s been tested with real film. Based in Brighton – repairs taken in by post or by drop-off.
